Too many children are being diagnosed with diabetes, asthma, and all types of cancers. Please visit the CDC (Center for Disease Control) online. There, you will find a list of various illnesses that attacks children. Information on Tuberculosis was moved here. Whooping Cough has been renamed as Pertussis. Ever heard of Candida? Well, children get it, too. It's a fungal infection. In adults they call it Candida, in children they call it Thrush (OPC), which occurs inside the mouth. Hookworm is a parasite (photo) that lives in the intestines. Viral Hepatitis is a liver disease. See Map of the USA where this disease is no stranger. The virus is highly contagious and is spread by person-to-person contact. With the exception of people of African decent, Head Lice infects all other races. If you ever traveled to or plan to travel to Eastern, Western, and Central Africa, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, please take note that there is a disease called East and West African Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) caused by the tsetse fly. Its bite is painful and as a result it produces a skin rash, fever, severe headaches, irritability, extreme fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and aching muscles and joints. Once the infection invades the central nervous system, one can experience progressive confusion, personality changes, slurred speech, seizures, and difficulty in walking and talking, and left untreated, death. E. Coli (Escherichia coli O157:H7) is a bacteria found in the intestines of cattle, deer, goats, and sheep. The toxins in this particular strain is said to be much more powerful than some of the others. As a result, it can make someone severely ill. E. Coli is also found in petting zoos, on the ground, on the fur of the animals, and even the railings that encages the animals. If you would like more information on these diseases and more, please visit the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
If your child seems to be quiet and does not want to talk to anyone, there could be a problem of autism. If your child just can't keep still and is fighting you and everybody else, there could be a problem of ADHD. With autism, too often people are linking it with mercury in the immunization shots. As for the overactive child, people have always linked sugar with that type of behavior. Well, guess what. They were right. Except now, that plain old white sugar has now turned into high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Because of the HFCS, everybody, not just children, are getting fat. Then there is the hydrogenated oils that's clogging our arteries. What are we suppose to eat if all the best foods are costing anywhere from two to three times more than the dangerous foods? Which leads to childhood diseases.
In addition, anyone who suffers from any type of cancer should watch their intake of processed sugars (meaning sugars not in their original form), because cancer cells feed off sugar. The more sugar you ingest into your body, the greater your chances are of becoming a cancer victim. You also may want to check your pH levels. If your alkaline level is 7.4 to 7.5, you are doing very good and the oxygen in your body is keeping diseases, fungi, viruses, bacteria, parasites, and anything else that wreaks havoc in our bodies at bay. These ailments cannot live in an alkaline/oxygenated environment. However, you do not want the alkaline level to drop to 6.8 or raise to 7.8; if it does, you will die... immediately. When the body is too acidic, it invites all the bad things in because those bad things feed off acids. So, what has to happen here is that when we keep our blood alkalized between 7.4 to 7.5, we should all feel healthy without the threat of any type of disease, bacteria, virus, fungi and parasites. You can find the acid/alkaline strips at a good health food store or pharmacy. Good luck.
Animals That Carry Salmonella
No matter how adorable an animal is, there could be some underlying dangers associated with it. As innocent as baby chicks and baby ducks are, they carry the Salmonella (outbreak) bacteria in their droppings. When a little boy finds a turtle somewhere in the yard and brings it into the house because he thinks it's the coolest thing he ever saw, could actually harm him due to the Salmonella from the turtle's surface. Other reptiles, such as the lizard and snake, also carry the Salmonella bacteria. The people who are most vulnerable to the harmful bacteria are infants, children under the age of five (5) years, people with weakened immune systems, especially those with HIV/AIDS/cancer, and organ transplant patients.
Precautionary measures in avoiding the spread of the Salmonella is to wash the hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling any of the mentioned animals; making sure to clean under the fingernails. Also, the surface where the animal may have traveled needs to be disinfected.
When a child starts to experience Salmonella symptoms (diarrhea, fever, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps), it usually occurs anywhere from 6 to 72 hours. Though antibiotics may be prescribed, it is said that some of the Salmonella cases have become resistant to ampicillin. Now they have stronger antibiotics to help rid the body of the bacteria.
Make Homework Fun!!
Except for birthdays and Christmas, the first day of school is almost always the favorite day in a young child's life. On the other hand, when they're much older, the last day of school is their favorite day. Nonetheless, they are anxious to go to school because they have heard so many great things about it. They want to meet their teacher. They want to meet other children just like them. Then after that first day, some children don't want to go back because it takes too long to go back home. But, eventually, as time goes on, they learn to accept the fact that they have to stay in school for long periods of time. And that's why the schools have divided the day into various activities to keep the child from getting too bored.
When a child is bored with school work, he/she will definitely become bored with homework. But what some parents fail to realize and/or accept is that the child is suppose to listen and obey while the parent is the one that sets the rules and the rules must always be met or else privileges will be taken away from the child. So, if a parent plans correctly, as soon as the child gets into the house, he/she knows that in order to get to watch television, play games, go outside, talk on the telephone, take a nap, and other favorites of theirs, that they have to find a spot at home and complete their homework. Habits such as this throughout a child's early school years will become habitual and the parent wouldn't have to repeat themselves as much as if no rules were ever set.
However, a parent/guardian will still have to enforce those rules in the event the child decides to test the waters to see if he/she can get away with it. But a parent has to stand firm and keep in mind that they are the adult and whatever the adult says, the child must do without flipping off at the mouth. But harsh words will result in resentment and resentment can make for a very rough relationship between adult and child. In order for an adult to make doing homework fun, the adult must spend some time with the child by asking and answering questions, but not giving the answers. Test the child later on, preferably at the dinner table, to see if the child remembers part of his/her homework. Then allow the child to ask a question from his/her homework and the adult or someone else in the room has to answer it. When someone else answers the question that the child posed to them, the child who did the homework will have a feeling of accomplishment because now that child feels smart and assured of him/herself that he/she knows the answers to the homework assignment. Continued behavior in this manner can result in a great report card and a child with great confidence.
Also, anytime that a child is in the vehicle, it can prove to be a learning situation as well. There are so many objects outside those windows that a child can learn about. If you see a police car, let the child know that that's the police. A fire truck, that that's a fireman. A traffic light, that that's the red light. Or a school bus, truck, birds, dogs, trees, etc. A child could always be learning something and at the same time, increasing their vocabulary. Even while you're in the department store or at the grocer's, teach, teach, teach. That makes for a very alert and studious child. And when they see you reading a book, newspaper, magazine, make sure that they have something to read as well; even if they can't read, the vision alone will be encouraging. And allow them to read back to you, whether they know how to or not. But never ever force a child to do something, it could come back at you unpleasantly. It will always be the responsibility of the adult to not give up on a child when the child seems uninterested. If the nonchalant behavior of the child continues or worsens, there could be more to the problem than meets the eye. There could be a problem with the child's vision or hearing. One must keep in mind that some children become frustrated when they can't absorb as quickly as you would like, while others can absorb and flourish almost immediately. If any those things are suspect, the adult may need to consult with the child's pediatrician.
Ask Your Child: "What Happened In School Today?"
Asking a child about his/her day in school makes the child feel loved, cared about, good on the inside, and important. This type of questioning can lead to a child becoming more verbal and it helps with his/her speech and understanding of the questions you pose while giving them the opportunity to exercise their brains by remembering things that happened earlier that day. It's okay if the child is a talker with you. He/She is learning. It makes them a better student for their teacher. However, a child must also learn the difference between talking too much in school and talking a lot at home. In school it can be disruptive to the classroom and the teacher will find reasons to call the parent to complain. A child does not like it when teachers call the house. So parents need to explain the difference of talking at home and at school. It wouldn't be a bad idea to mention to the child about any possible consequences if the teacher makes it a habit of calling to complain about the child's behavior.
Keep Your Child Involved
When you announce to your child that you're planning a party for him/her, who has the biggest grin, you or your child? The love your child have for you just increased one-hundred fold. Your child feels important because you put him/her in charge of fulfilling the guest list and choosing what theme he/she wants. Just to see a smile on a child's face is such a wonderful feeling. You always want to see your child happy. When a child feels involved in family functions, that child matures because he/she has been given the opportunity to do things that other children have no clue in doing. Sharing things that may seem trivial to an adult can appear important to a child.
Playing Made Easy
What kind of games should a child play? Games that strengthens their minds and their bodies. Baseball leagues, football leagues, basketball leagues, soccer leagues, and many other contact and non-contact sports are what children crave to do to release some of the tension they get from restrictions placed on them. Too many restrictions can make a child feel imprisoned and playing sports or becoming involved with an extracurricular activity can be healthy for the child as long as the child isn't ridiculed in front of others or made to believe that the child cannot make a mistake or forced to do this because it's a dream that the parent never fulfilled him/herself.
Important things a parent/guardian can do for the child is to make sure that the child's body can tolerate the amount of activity associated with the sport. So many athletes end up passing out on the field or on the courts because no one knew that the child had a heart condition. A complete physical examination of your child should be done and not just a routine check-up. It is in the best interest of everyone that the parent/guardian make certain that an electrocardiogram be done, and if the child ever complained about body pains, have those painful areas checked out as well. It could be the start of a very serious health problem. Seeing your child succeed in any sport are moments of pride. Seeing them collapse because no one took the time to check their heart and other body parts, could be a lifelong regret.
Homeschooling
Who says everybody has to go to public or private schools? Homeschooling is just as good or better; depending on what the child is learning and how much time is spent learning. The one thing that a home schooled child may regret is not having any interactions with children other than those in his/her household. But, that could happen if the parents in close proximity of others who are home schooling their children would get together for field trips, visit with each other maybe once a month at someone else's home. They can participate in arts and crafts together, and other things of that nature so that the child who feels alone won't feel alone all the time. Sometimes children in situations like this don't appreciate arrangements like this and seem to be sad because they haven't yet grasp onto the true understanding of staying away from public educational institutions. These children do, however, come into the knowledge of why their parents kept them at home and away from others and do eventually appreciate the protection their parent(s) gave them.
However one's feelings about segregating their children from public institutions, homeschooling isn't for everybody. It requires organization, tolerance, persistence, consistency, creativity, and much more. There are curriculum packages to pay for, and must be accredited to meet the local school system's requirements in your hometown. There is no bi-weekly salary. No health insurance. No government aid for keeping your children home unless the child has a serious health problem. But they aren't paying for the child's schooling, they will be paying for the child's health issues.
Before considering such a move, research is a necessity. Keeping your child home all day and teaching them something for 30 minutes or an hour does not constitute homeschooling. It only constitutes keeping your child home from school. The home will be inspected and lesson plans must be available for your State worker to view. And though it is a great idea to keep your children home where you can monitor their whereabouts and what they should learn, it is advisable to get advice and opinions from others to see if this is really what you want to get involved with. But, at the end, the decision lies with you.
Bringing Home A Family Dog
Oftentimes too many, people have a tendency to choose dogs because of their beauty. However, good looks can be deceiving. It is best to do some investigatory work on the choice of pets that you bring into your home when there are small children or newborns. Why? Because there has been too many horror stories involving jealous dogs attacking innocent babies while the babies were in their cribs or not in close proximity of an adult.
Below is a list of dogs that, according to the American Kennel Club, are the top dog breeds for families:
Dangerous Dog Registry
The Dangerous Dog Registry is beginning to catch on after Virginia initiated it for their State. If the name of your State is not included here, please check online to see if it is available near you. The purpose of this registry is to report any dog that has attacked anyone, or one that you suspect is too dangerous or vicious to live in or around your neighborhood. Please be aware that not all States are participating in this type of registry. There are, however, certain counties that have taken a stance for the well-being of human life.

WARNING: Despite the above information, please take the time to research before purchasing and bringing ANY animal (stray or otherwise) into your home with your young children or immobile persons. Honest and authentic papers proving breed does not always guarantee that that particular animal is safe around small children. They can be cuddly and cute, but they can also be distempered and dangerous. You have to remember the nature of the beast. Provoked or not, being on the defense is a part of their genetic coding. However, some animal breeds can love you and take care of you more so than any human is capable of doing. Just be careful with your selection.
No one else trusts your judgment like your child does.
