Background and Overview Raised in the Village of Harlem, New York, Dr. Tonya K. Freeman is the daughter of Marjorie Catherine Whindleton and James Alexander Freeman Sr. She is espoused to Dr. Bill Pinder and mother to Shanti Michelle Slade. Utilizing her early parochial education, plus her love of reading and research, Dr. Tonya excelled as a self-taught individual with a mind always open to learning, sharing and new experiences. These factors, along with her winsome personality, have placed her in demand as a seminar/workshop leader and as a motivational speaker to those who have had the opportunity to meet and hear her. Fun loving and possessing a zest for life, she possess a gift which enables her to connect with persons from all walks of life. Dr. Tonya has had the opportunity to address: Entrepreneur Dr. Tonya also coordinated and commentated fashion shows under her then married name Tonya Slade. Her company, Tonya Slade & Company Models in Revue performed: Television Industry Upon the death of her mother in 1982, Dr. Tonya took some time off to care for her family until 1988 when she lucked into the television industry. She has had the opportunity of working David Brenner’s Nightlife Show, a Motown Production, Showtime’s Classic Rock & Roll Reunion, The Nelson Mandela Freedom Fest, London, England, Irving Berlin’s 100th Birthday Celebration, The 30th Annual Grammy Awards, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards, The 1988 Tony Awards, Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary Show and Inside Edition. She held positions as receptionist, talent assistant and head librarian. After working in the television industry from 1988 – 1994, Dr. Tonya decided to go on a quest. Walking away from a secure, well paying job, she began life as a street vendor blending oils and making incense and becoming an independent researcher on the subject of Black Nationalism. In 1996, Dr. Tonya (a.k.a. Monifa Yaa) was the host and Associate Producer of Let’s Talk, a weekly cable show for Queens Public Television in New York City. Performance Artist Dr. Tonya is a natural dancer, who has spent a considerable amount of time on stage; as a child, and professionally as an adult. Using her gift and training, she created and conducted a dance class called Sexy Movement to assist in building confidence and character in women. This class was first offered at the Rebecca's Health Spa in Harlem and the Afrikan Poetry Theater, Queens, New York. She continued this work under various names and on several occasions and locations in Atlanta. The Afrikan Poetry Theatre also afforded Dr. Tonya the opportunity to share her poems with the community. She also recited poetry for an Erotic Poetry Night. This led her to appear at the Jamaica Farmers Market’s Open Mic as well. It was there that she met her beloved life partner, Dr. Bill Pinder. As a Performance Artist whose Spoken Word Poetry is inspirational, educational, fun and passionate, Dr. Tonya's stage presence is delightful and quite engaging. Many, who have heard her, have noted that her signature voice is captivating! Dr. Tonya has also performed locally at: Javalogy – Jun 2006, Atlanta Writer/Educator In 1978, Dr. Tonya began a career as a workshop facilitator founding Ladies Personified teaching women the value of being a sensual, powerful, intelligent woman. In 2001, this concept led to the creation of The Art of Femininity, a Yahoo group – which became an online source of inspiration, motivation and sharing with SiStars around the world. In 2002, Dr. Tonya was ordained as an inter-faith minister and received doctorate degrees in divinity, metaphysics and motivation through the Universal Life Church. Always seeking another adventure Dr. Tonya has edited and published an online edition of Spiral Dance News: Unfolding the Femi9 Woman from February 2003 – September 2004. In 2006, she appeared as a featured writer and had several articles published in Atlanta's Oracle 20/20 metaphysical magazine. Dr. Tonya K. Freeman, affectionately known as Mama Tonya, is Founder of Goddesses of Fortune: Inspiring Women to Greater Wealth (http://www.goddessesoffortune.net) and Co-Founder MOSA Radio Network with her husband Dr. Bill Pinder. On MOSA Radio (http://mosaradio.net), she hosted Wisdom Talks, a program on Women's Empowerment and Wellness and The Writer’s Den which both aired LIVE for a time on 1320 WARL out of Providence, Rhode Island. There are over a hundred interviews in the archives, a great accomplishment to say the least. Dr. Tonya has been interviewed on various radio programs: Dare To Dream, WARL 1320 AM – Providence, Rhode Island On Goddesses Of Fortune: The Gathering, a weekly tele-seminar every Sunday at 8:00 PM ET, Diva Dr. Tonya facilitates an inspiring, uplifting, encouraging call for women on the principles of wealth consciousness through the medium of Goddesses of Fortune. In staying true to her mission of empowering women through knowledge of self, she also hosts tele-seminars on Menstrual Mysteries and WOMBnifesting Through the Day as well as various other topics that are informative and empowering. Now, this Bald Headed Diva (by choice) is focused on spreading her message of empowerment through spoken word performances and speaking engagements. Her current projects are: a poetry ebook and CD of her passionate, life’s journey. Wholististic Health Practitioner Thoroughly committed to an alternative approach to life and health, Dr. Tonya is also a Certified Aromatherapist, a Reiki/Karuna Ki Master and an Ancient Femi9 Wisdom Keeper with over 30 years of transformational work with women.
