As we sat in Kurt's funeral, my thoughts and emotions ran rampantly. I felt guilty because I had not been aware of the gravity of his illness and had therefore not been a part of his life during those last months. I had not had a chance to say good-bye. My sense of loss was even more vivid as I listened to person after person describe their relationship with the deceased. As I listened, I realized that I really had not known this person who was my first cousin and now I could only become acquainted with him through the fond verbal memories of others. More>>>

Dark Days for Black Women
There are people who stereotype them as being "hood rat" women, jealous and some even consider them the most unattractive. These are the stereotypes of dark-skinned women.
A walk in the life of a dark-skinned female may seem to have the most difficult pair of shoes to fit in. With black men dating more white women each day and the percentage of black women who are married declining in the United States from 62 percent in 1950 to 36 percent in 2000, according to http://freerepublic.com/focus/news/715758/posts, where does the dark-skinned female stand in relationships? With music artists such as Lil' Boosie and his great love for "red bones" and the lack of dark skin females seen in music videos, it seems as if the world is not liking the dark skinned female too much. I believe we should be proud of our heritage, and others should try to understand it. In this book, I use poetry as a means of teaching black people about their history, heritage and culture. These are lessons that were never taught in school. Though many of my poems reveal the hardships people of color have endured, they were written to open people's eyes to the fact that blacks are a strong race of people able to succeed against all odds, while at the same time contributing significantly to human progress. I was invited to his home for an art exhibition. Actually, I wasn’t invited, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time which was the elevator. My neighbor, the host of this party, who previously inspired me to channel my inner artist, had three canvases propped against the wall as he pressed the down button. When the doors opened, I offered to help him. More>>>

We initially started out meeting monthly to share our passion for reading but soon had a vision that we were destined to be more than just a social reading group. Because of the philanthropic thrust of the Tulsa branch of SST, we consider ourselves more than a book club. We host several literary events a year with the largest being the Annual Fall Books and Brunch - a fund raiser for Sisters Sippin' Tea Community Outreach Programs. We have an active book review committee, make substantial contributions in our community and maintain a reading group - Little Sisters Sippin' Tea - for girls eight through twelve years of age.
